Making fun bird crafts with your kids can be a fantastic way to help them learn about lots of different topics.
Choosing projects that reflect the seasons, ie. looking at penguins in the winter or tropical parrots during the summer might help your kids to visualise how the weather changes through the year. In a similar way you could use an owl craft to start off a chat about nocturnal creatures, and bring to life how day changes into night and back again.
There are some fantastic books available which might inspire younger children to try out a new bird craft project.
My boys have both loved Owl Babies
by Martin Waddell and Patrick Benson, the engaging story draws them in time and time again, whilst the beautiful illustrations are a treat for grown ups and kids!
Counting Birds
by Alice Melvin introduces of all sorts of birds as it encourages children to count along. This might help younger kids decide for themselves what type of bird they want to base their craft projects on.
For older children Songbird Story
by Michael Rosen might be more apt with its thought provoking storyline and colourful, realistic illustrations.
Bird themed crafts for kids to make can also play a part when children celebrate special days such as Easter or Thanksgiving.
Making fluffy Easter chicks in the spring or fat turkeys in the fall can really help illustrate to younger children what a traditional celebration is all about.
Natural materials such as feathers, twigs and leaves can really enhance your craft projects and kids of all ages will enjoy a nature walk to gather collage materials for their birds. Take plenty of bags though if you try this idea, my kids always find so much stuff that their pockets just don't have enough space.
You can also buy some amazing coloured feathers from craft supply shops or online. These will look brilliant on bright parrots or peacocks, not forgetting the beautiful, imaginary birds that always take flight when we get going with our bird crafts at home!

He is made from a sock, some bright craft foam and a kitchen sponge. Make yours with or without the pirate hat, or try different colours to make a different type of bird?
